Subject Matter: Algebra

Grade Level: 8 - 10

Lesson Objective: Students will be able to:
  • determine is the parabola open upward or downward
  • identify the axis of symmetry
  • determine the roots
  • determine the vertex
  • graph the parabola using the roots and the vertex

Learners will demonstrate knowledge of/understanding of/ability to: determine the meaning of the roots and the vertex

Student Research Questions:

Essential Question:

How do quadratic relations model real-world problems and their solutions?

Subsidiary Questions
1.  How does gravity affect the parabola?
2.  What does the line of symmetry mean?
3  What does it mean to have a maximum or minimum.
4.  How does this relate to real life?
5.  What do the roots tell us about the parabola?
6.  What if a parabola has no roots/zeros?

Assessment:  Students are well versed in finding information of the net.  These types of assignments will be done with ease.  The teacher can assess learning by surveying the class or by evaluating the answers to questions.  Understanding of this concept is easy to determine.
